Holla Knits Accessories 2015!

Written by Sarah. Posted in crochet, knits, KYC Presents, magazine

It’s getting chilly out there! If you’re looking for some knitwear inspiration, you should download a copy of Holla Knits Accessories Magazine!

As always, Alyson has spearheaded a collection of really exciting and unconventional pieces. Holla Knits always has something that you won’t find anywhere else!

I’m really excited about this magazine because, aside from the gorgeous patterns, there is a little article by yours truly in there! I wrote a bit about learning to crochet after spending the last 10+ years as a knitter. It’s hard to go back to basics! Especially when you’re a stubborn lady like me. Keep an eye out for this photo of my friend Katie’s adorable daughter CE (and my first crochet project is in there, too) in this issue and my article will be close behind.

fashion revolution day

Lots of links today! But first something a bit more serious.

Yesterday was Fashion Revolution Day marking one year since the disaster at Rana Plaza. I pledged to buy less and make more. It’s been challenging. Before I buy anything wearable, I put a lot of time and thought into it and I have a great appreciation for the few pieces that I’ve purchased. I’ve been working to educate myself, to research and shop with reliable brands, and to spend more on products that will last longer or with companies that will be transparent. I wish I had time to make even more but my focus has turned to building a wearable wardrobe that I really love as well as learning new techniques that will help me create a variety of pieces. Everlane is collecting donations for The Rana Plaza Donors Trust Fund and will match the first $10k. While not everyone can afford to donate money and not all of us have the time to make every piece of clothing that we wear, I encourage every maker to speak out on this issue.

>>  I was already planning on watching FX’s television adaptation of Fargo since it stars Martin Freeman. But throw in a yarn-bombed bus by Olek and I am 110% there.

>>  Everyone is talking about Nicki Minja’s “make-under” but I’m looking at this knit dress! I love the color of the form-fitting gown she wore to The Other Woman premiere. And you KNOW that I love formal knitwear. Does anybody know which designer this dress is from?

>> Karen at Fringe Association shared a great tip for knitting in the round with interchangeable needles. It is definitely something I’ll be trying out since I have one set of interchangeable needles and more simultaneous projects going on than I’d care to admit. You have no idea how difficult life was when I’d misplaced my size 7s!

>> Did you know that there is a Wikipedia page for the “Sweater Curse”? Now you do.

Don’t forget to enter to win a pattern from the Holla Knits Spring/Summer 14 collection! Contest ends on Wednesday!

Holla Knits S/S 14 Giveaway

Written by Sarah. Posted in Uncategorized

I’m pretty psyched to be a part of the Holla Knits  Blog Tour because I’ve been eyeing these patterns every since the preview! I’ve probably shared with you all before that I never used to be into lightweight knits. I’ll knit on a sweater whenever I damn well please! But I’ve seen so many adorable knits for spring, I’ve definitely come around. And this collection has really got me dreaming.

I’m really loving the textures and lace in this collection. It feels very vintage beachy to me. Is that a real aesthetic? I just invented it.

You can purchase all of the patterns on the Holla Knits site here. I’m really tempted to have a couple of these designs jump my queue (looking at you, Cafe au Lait)!

Do you love these designs? Today I’m giving away a free copy of one of the Holla Knits S/S 14 patterns. Just leave a comment below before next Wednesday in order to enter to win a pattern of your choice from the collection.

Saddle Shoulder sweaterTop-Down Seamless Saddle Shoulder Sweater by Kyoko Nakayoshi

I know I promised Jon a Timberline (about, what, four months ago? Six months ago?!) but this sweater is so handsome and simple. I want to make one now! My dad’s been asking for a sweater (to replace a moth-eaten one that I had noting to do with in the first place but he sees an opportunity and he runs with it). Perhaps this will one day be the one. He would look great in it. Who am I kidding? I’ve got way too much other stuff to knit! One day! I love you! I’ll never let go!

>> Basically ever since I met the lovely lady behind Mokuyobi Threads, I’ve been coveting this tee. I need to buy it, right?

>>  Photographer Christopher Payne gives us a look at the US textile industry, a memory of what it used to be. The photographs are absolutely gorgeous and I think the concept is fascinating. It’s such a shame that so much of our textiles are made overseas. Really just baffling when you think about how just a generation ago the American garment industry was thriving.

>> Speaking of America’s textile industry, check out this fundraiser for Ohio Knitting Mills. They are raising money through indiegogo to make this mill fully operational. Really cool!

>> The Holla Knits Knit-a-long begins on February 3rd. Two people are going to knit The Crash! You should totally join in if you’ve had your eye on an HK pattern!

>> Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall 2014 collection has a lot of knitted faux-chain mail (for lack of a better explanation) going on. It looks super warm but I hope this does not become a trend. Either way, they’re pretty cool pieces, especially the ones with the beading. You know what, I change my mind. New York has been so goddamn cold, I think I would like to wear one of those.

I’m so sick of this cold weather. I love sweaters like crazy but I’ve had enough. I’ve forgotten what summer feels like! Can’t take a break from my needles or I will surely freeze to death this weekend.

What are you knitting on this weekend?

The Crash is ON SALE

Written by Sarah. Posted in design, DIY, knits, KYC Presents, sweater

Check it out! This week Holla Knits is promoting my sweater pattern, The Crash. That means that you can pick up a copy for $3! That’s 50% off! As we are showing The Crash a little love, keep your eye on the Holla Knits blog for inspiration, styling suggestions, and more! Allyson will be sharing her outfits with The Crash later this week.

Monday, I kicked off the sale with this post about dressing The Crash up and down. This piece is a little intimidating but, deep down, it’s really fun to play around with.  Since it’s very fashion forward, it can make everyday jeans and boots look pretty fierce. Here’s a peek at my favorite outfit.

The Crash Giveaway!

Written by Sarah. Posted in design, DIY, FO, giveaway, knits, KYC Presents

Sweater season is already in full swing here in the city so there could be no better time for today’s post! As part of the Holla Knits blog tour, today I’m giving away a copy of The Crash!

the crash

The samples are shown with contrasting shoulders (Lion Brand Superwash Merino Cashmere and Lion Brand Alpine Wool) and in monotone (Unplanned Peacock Studio Superwash Merino Bulky and Unplanned Peacock Studio Superwash Merino Bulky both in Onyx). Like I’ve said before, it’s super extra fierce! It can be worn punky with a black skirt, fishnets, and boots or just spice up a pair of jeans with cute flats for an easy brunch look. I was inspired by those furry vests that never seem to go out of style, faux fur throws that decorate every Scandinavian-style living room, and diva shoulder details. I paired that with a contrasting, conservative diamond pattern to make straightforward menswear meet bold surprises. Go big or go home!

As far as construction, you couldn’t ask for a breezier knit. The sweater is knit flat in six pieces. The shoulder pads are attached before sleeves are set in. Voila!

I have to thank Allyson for embracing the craziness of this design! I love her wild style and so admire her for making Holla Knits all about patterns that are unconventional and downright fun.

Want to knit this serious sweater yourself? Just leave a comment below to be entered to win a copy of The Crash! A winner will be drawn on Friday 9/27!

ps. Double your odds! Check out Unplanned Peacock‘s blog for another chance to win a copy of the pattern!

I haven’t shared any photos of the second sample which is knit with Unplanned Peacock Studio yarn. The shoulder details are knit in the same colorway as the rest of the sweater (but in the bulky weight) so you can see everything in monotone! Check it out!

Holla Knits F/W Preview by KYC!

Written by Sarah. Posted in design, DIY, FO, knits, KYC Presents, photos, press, sweater

I’m really excited today, guys. After lots of hard work and waiting and recently some rough times, I can finally share something cool with you! Today I can reveal to you my pattern for the Holla Knits Fall/Winter collection!

the crash

There she is!

The pattern is called The Crash and it’s probably the most challenging thing I’ve ever designed. Allyson’s funky style and the bold looks of past Holla Knits collections really inspired me to go crazy and design something really daring. It’s a cool look that can be punky or dressed down but it’s wearable. I had fun mixing masculine lines with vintage textures.

Right now I’m totally teasing you because the collection does not come out until Monday. I just couldn’t keep it to myself anymore. Make sure that you STAY TUNED! I’ll have all of the details on 9/16! In the mean time, hop on the Holla Knits blog to see the other designs from the collection!

Sneak Peek: Holla Knits Fall Design!

Written by Sarah. Posted in design, knits, KYC Presents, style, sweater

Things have picked up so much over the past few months! I can’t even explain how crazy it’s been and, frankly, I’ve had a hard time keeping up with it all! It’s all been worth it, though. And I can finally begin to reveal what I’ve been working on so feverishly!

holla knits sweaterphoto via Holla Knits

I designed a sweater!

Monday morning, Allyson posted a few preview pics of my design for the Holla Knits Fall/Winter 2013 collection! I won’t get into any spoilers here but I will say that I am very proud of this design and I really look forward to seeing other people make and wear it! Writing this pattern was probably one of the most difficult things I’ve done in a long long time and I loved challenging myself.

It’s an odd sensation knowing that the sneak peeks are out. I’ve thought about this sweater for so many hours of my life, it’s crazy to think that people are checking it out for the first time. Maybe working on this has unraveled my brain a little. Probably.

See more  photos of my design along with sneak peeks of the rest of the Fall collection over at the HK blog! What do you think? Are you itching for more?
